Omona Original: Best K-Pop Deep Cuts from March - June 2020

I made a post over on ONTD earlier this year with a short list of what were, in my opinion, the best deep cuts from K-Pop albums released in January and February earlier this year. I had intended to make it a series but with the pandemic, everything kind of got lost in the mix. I've finally decided to follow up so here's some of the best that you might have missed while in lockdown:

Album: CONTINUOUS (Mini Album/EP)
Release Date: March 10, 2020
Lead Single: HOWLING

Why Does "All I Know" Stand Out?
Victon released a phenomenally cohesive and strong Mini Album in March that blends pop, ballad, and hip-hop elements seamlessly. "All I Know" is no exception and is a fantastic mid-tempo moody jam. We've got acoustic guitar, a simple hip hop beat, and a pulsating EDM style synthy bassline underlying the whole thing and it just works so well. Plus these guys are great singers (who don't have to over do it with high notes and belting to prove their competence) so the song is a treat to the ears. If you missed this Mini Album when it came out - now is the time to correct the error of your ways and give the whole thing some love!

Album: DA CAPO (Mini Album/EP)
Release Date: April 22, 2020

Why Does "YOU.ZIP" Stand Out?
How fitting! April has one of the best K-Pop songs of April! The song stands out on the album for its cool sleekness. It utilizes rain sound effects and an occasional piano riff to create atmosphere, it has a typical pop chorus but it's executed with a smoothness and controlled energy that punctuates the more laid back verses really well. This song is a grower - the more you listen to it, the more you fall in love with it.

Album: THE KEYS (Mini Album/EP)
Release Date: April 28, 2020
Lead Single: BAZOOKA!

Why Does "Tweaks ~ Heavy Cloud But No Rain" Stand Out?
This Mini Album is a bit of a disjointed mess and none of the songs have much of a thread that connects them. The songs all have some pretty bizarre names as well, including this one. But don't let the name throw you (or the use of the word "tweaks" - I still don't really get it to be honest lol). The song has a deep-house inspired beat, the lyrics are simple and the song has a chill but dancey vibe. The song just works and makes for an easy and enjoyable listen.

Album: THE NOCTURNE (Mini Album/EP)
Release Date: May 11, 2020
Lead Single: I'M IN TROUBLE

Why Does "Back to Me" Stand Out?
Another solid EP from a group that consistently releases great music. I had a hard time deciding whether to include "Back to Me" on this list or "Firework" but "Back to Me" just barely won out. The 80s style drum sounds, the catchy dreamy chorus with English lyrics, and the light jangly guitar - the whole thing just works so well. They did perform this one live so I suppose it's the B-Side to "I'm In Trouble" and maybe not necessarily a "Deep Cut" but there's no music video so I've decided to include it. Nu'est also have great contrast between their vocalists with each singer sounding pretty distinct which really helps this song shine.

Album: NEVERLAND (Mini Album/EP)
Release Date: June 9, 2020
Lead Single: BUTTERFLY

Why Does "Pantomime" Stand Out?
The song is just very different and unique. It feels quite experimental for a pop song (in a good way, in a SHINee kind of way). It really exists in its own world from the intro to the unexpected beat switch-up at the end. Listen to it through and then listen to it again and then tell your friends why it's one of the best pop songs of 2020!

Album: TAKE A LEAP (Mini Album/EP)
Release Date: June 24, 2020
Lead Single: ONE (LUCID DREAM)

Why Does "OMG" Stand Out?
The lead single is fantastic and is, frankly, one of the best K-Pop releases of the year. But the third track stands on its own as a great pop song as well. It has Infinite vibes so if you're an Infinite fan missing the group's output right now - let Sungyeol's little brother's group tide you over for now.

Album: VIVID (Mini Album/EP)
Release Date: June 29, 2020
Lead Single: THE ANSWER

Why Does "Surreal" Stand Out?
This is a big, dramatic pop song in the best kind of way. The staccato vocal style in the pre-chorus gives me BTS "Fake Love" vibes while the chorus is emotional and bombastic without being noisy or overwhelming. There are some real gems on VIVID and this is my favourite of them.

What did I miss, Omona? What releases do you feel were overlooked during March - June?
