Flashback Friday

It’s Friday! Every week I check the charts for this day in the past and post the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week we are going back to the 3rd week of November, 2009. All the songs have been posted before, so this time we will see some live stages.

#3 Park Bom “You And I”
I’m going to mention it every damn time she pops up in these posts because it still makes me mad: the fact that her solo songs charted and sold so well but YG have kept her songs in the basement is a damn shame. Songs going back to what? 2005? 2006? Ugh. Anyways. This was her solo debut song and would be later included in 2NE1’s “To Anyone” album a year later. It would reach #1. Here’s Bom (and her cleavage) at the 2NE1 New Evolution tour in 2012. She looks so happy. A recent IG update hinted at her working on a comeback.

#2 2PM “Heartbeat”
This was the lead single for their “01:59PM” album. The song would reach the top spot. I think I say this every time, but I always expect them to rip their shirts off at the end lol. I guess it is what I remember most from this era. Oh! Also this was when Jaebom left the group. Here is their “Heartbeat” stage on their MBC comeback show in 2013. No bare chests here either darn it.

#1 SS501 “Love Like This”
After activities overseas and an EP filled with solo songs, they would regroup and release the “Rebirth” EP together. “Rebirth” would end up being one of the third bestselling album for the year, following Super Junior and G-Dragon. An English version of the song from the song’s writer’s group was also released that year.

Honorable Mentions

#5 Taeyang “Wedding Dress”

Oh, I still love this song so much, it’s still my favorite of his solos. This was the follow up to “Where U At?” and would also take the top spot. I remember there being so many English covers of this on YouTube too. Do you think they played this song at his wedding? I mean, they lyrics don’t really fit, but Versace On The Floor was their first dance so I think anything went on the reception playlist tbh lol. Can you believe it’s been almost 3 years since they’ve gotten married?

#6 SHINee “Ring Ding Dong”
Ah, the song that was banned during test season (coincidentally right now) because it’s just so hard to get it out of your head once you hear it. Because you can’t study for that college entrance exam when you are too busy ring ding dong ring ding dong ring diggy ding diggy ding ding ding-ing. This was the single off of the group’s “2009, Year Of Us” EP. Here’s a stage from a Music Bank show in 2015, during the “Married To The Music” era, I think. I'm mad they cut away from Taemin during the dance break lol. The group recently reunited this week with Minho’s return from the Marines.

Omg...that bom performance made me tear up cause it made me miss 2ne1...but when she removed the covering to reveal the two shirtless dudes in the drum??? I started ctfu 😂😂

But really Bom sounded SO good here. It’s a shame her technique has lead to her singing voice deteriorating (for lack of better word) over time. Her two solo releases under 2ne1 were so good, it’s a shame her new stuff hasn’t really stuck (except the ballad version of spring is EXCELLENT). Gotta give it to her tho, she was hustling last year and I was just wondering when she was gonna release something new so I hope she does!!
Ah man I was fine until I played ring ding dong and jonghyun’s voice was the first thing I heard. Such an immense talent
Heartbeat was a big comeback for me, it was when i was super interested in kpop and when Jay Park left
RDD and Wedding Dress are such FIRM kpop classics!! Rooting for Bom
!!! SUCH a good time in kpop. I had a blast during this era. BlackPink bbs need to learn from their seniors about what happens to girls in YG, even the solo stars like CL.

RDD when Jonghyun breaks out his first line....hits so damn hard.

Heartbeat was so damn good. I remember them performing it at the gayos and they looked so good!!
2009 one of the best in KPOP for me!
Oh my, all of these songs are iconic and bring me back to my teenage years. Good old times 😭
they did so wrong to bom. I hope she is in a good place.
oh man bom <3333

also still wonder what was so bad that got Jaebom kicked out cause it was def something more than his controversial post i recall he admitted to something and jyp was like bYE lol

did he ever reveal what it was?

He never revealed what it was specifically. But according to the rumours that I've heard from back in the day, it wasn't anything particularly scandalous. Basically, he violated his contract due to a technicality. I think something about signing another contract whilst he was still under contract? I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember that it had to do with his contract terms.
we'll never really know until one of the guys write s a tell-all book.
Wow, I love all these songs...But somehow I forgot that they all came out around the same time? 🥺 2009 really was the year of so many iconic bops! 🤩

I honestly love all of Bom's solo work. I preferred Don't Cry to You & I, but I like them both. It's a shame she hasn't released more music. She could have been so much bigger - obligatory fuck YG. Speaking of YG, Wedding Dress is still the only Taeyang song I have on constant replay, I absolutely love that song! I literally start belting to this at the most random moments lol

RING DING DONG IS FOREVER MY JAM! HOT DAMN! *starts bopping to the chorus*

Love Like This is one of my fave SS501 songs, I think it was the first song I really liked from them. Heartbeat was one hell of a comeback, that era really put 2PM on the map!
Ring Ding Dong pretty much got me into kpop. ^_^
I'm gonna cry. THIS WAS MY TIME. A wonderful time to be a kpop fan.
