Netflix to Produce Korean Remake of Hit Spanish Series "Money Heist"

Fans of Netflix's hit Spanish crime drama Money Heist will have more to look forward to after the show concludes its fifth and final season in 2021.

Netflix said Tuesday that it has greenlit a 12-episode first season of an all-new Korean version of Money Heist (La casa de papel), which is expected to go into production sometime next year.

Set on the Korean peninsula, the adaptation will be directed by K-drama veteran Kim Hong-sun (The Guest, Voice and Black) and written by Ryu Yong-jae, best known for Netflix's Korean original My Holo Love and tvN's hit thriller series Psychopath Diary. The production will be a collaboration between Korean companies BH Entertainment and Contents Zium.

The original Money Heist has been a huge performer for Netflix, according to the company's internal viewership metrics. The fourth season, released April 3, garnered 65 million views worldwide in its first four weeks — more than breakout docuseries Tiger King.

Created and executive produced by Álex Pina, the Spanish series follows two carefully prepared heists led by "the Professor" (Álvaro Morte), one on the Royal Mint of Spain, and the other on the Bank of Spain.

Netflix said the Korean version will "breathe new life into the familiar storyline and bring the material afresh to global audiences."

Added Pina in a statement: “Korean creators have been developing their own language and audiovisual culture for years. They have managed, like our series, to go beyond cultural borders and become a point of reference for thousands of viewers around the world, especially among young people.” He added, “That is why I find it fascinating that the world of La casa de papel is so attractive to Korean creators as to do an adaptation. The fact that the action is set on the Korean Peninsula also seems to me to be a milestone which I am really delighted about."
