Theater production company, Showplay, said Wednesday that the musical remake will include the TV series' fantasy elements and highlight the romance between the two main characters.
The series revolves around Jang Man-wol (played by IU), the owner of the Hotel Del Luna, which is a mystical hotel that serves spirits. Cursed to live forever, she hires a reluctant hotelier Goo Chan-sung (Yeo) to manage the hotel, gifting him with the ability to communicate with ghosts.
At the hotel, Goo's task is to make sure the guests feel comfortable and to help them satisfy their unfulfilled desires in life. Some evil spirits try to take advantage of the soft-hearted Goo, but Jang always shows up to save him.
"The musical version of Hotel Del Luna will add new storylines and spectacle to the original plot to deliver refreshing twists," Showplay said in a statement.
"It will also feature iconic settings such as the Moon Tree in Jang Man-wol's garden that captivated audiences on screen. It will also replicate the characters' glamorous costumes and colorful accessories that caught the attention of viewers."
Along with Yeo and IU, the roster of stars in the series included Pyo Ji-hoon, better known by his stage name P.O. as the hotel porter, Kang Min-a as an intern, and Lee Do-hyun as Jang's first love. The highest rated tvN drama series of 2019 was written by the "Hong sisters" ― Hong Jeong-eun and Hong Mi-ran ― who also wrote "The Greatest Love" (2011) and "Master's Sun" (2013).
The musical will be filled with songs by popular singers, another key attraction. The soundtrack of the original series featured artists 10cm, Gummy, Taeyeon of Girls' Generation, Chungha, Heize, Paul Kim and Red Velvet among others, many of which topped Korea's music charts.
Meanwhile, the U.S. remake of the series is currently in the works. In June 2020, the series' production house Studio Dragon inked a co-production partnership with Skydance Television to remake the series in the U.S. in hopes of promoting the power of storytelling in K-dramas.
Last year, an exhibition featuring props and costumes and even original sets of the drama series was held in Seoul.
IU is also poised to make her feature film debut this year in director Lee Byung-heon's soccer film "Dream." Yeo will star alongside Shin Ha-kyun in JTBC's upcoming thriller series "Beyond Evil," which will be aired in February.
The "Hotel Del Luna" musical is slated for its premiere in 2022.
