If you’re in need of a playlist refresh, then let Jessica Jung step forward to assist. In Vogue’s latest episode of Listen Up, the K-pop singer — who’s been in the music industry since she was a young girl — reveals the up-and-coming musicians she listens to on repeat.
Calling up her favourite artists — Daniel Caesar, Dvsn and Raveena — Jung chats to each about their career, sound and influences while revealing a little more about the secret life of a K-pop icon. “I trained for seven years. I did all the singing and dancing lessons,” she says of her days spent preparing to be a pop star at SM Entertainment, before debuting with group Girls’ Generation. “It was like a private school. There was a no-dating rule, no messaging, no emails.” Now Jung’s career achievements have further expanded; she’s a solo singer-songwriter, actor, author of young-adult novel Shine, and founder of fashion label Blanc & Eclare.
Jung’s younger sister Krystal — also a gifted musician and actor — actually recommended Canadian R&B duo Dvsn for Listen Up. Also featured is soulful Indian-American musician Raveena, who sings her song, Petal, over Zoom. Then there’s Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar, who asks Jung what it was like to be a K-pop star in training, before the pair agree to split a soju drink sometime having bonded over their mutual love of 1990s band, Boyz II Men.
