Flashback Friday

Every week I go through the charts for this day in the past and share the top three songs. Then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. This week, we are going back to see what was on top for the 2nd week in January, 2009. Most of the songs were posted before, so we’ll see some comeback stages.

#3 Leessang featuring Jung In “Champion”
This song was inspired by the true story of Korean boxing champion Choi Yo Sam. In the last round of a Christmas match, he dropped with only five seconds remaining. He beat the count and won the fight. But he still collapsed again in the ring and was rushed to the hospital. He passed away a week after the match. Leessang’s Gil wrote this song dedicated to the boxer, who was apparently an acquaintance to both Gil and Gary. Gary would direct the music video.

#2 Gavy NJ “Love Story”
I couldn’t find anything much about this song. All I got was this was a non-album single that was released in mid-January. But I guess the song was a hit, because in August of last year the group released a new version of it. Because of member changes, the new 2021 version features a whole different lineup. Here’s the original Gavy NJ with their Music Core comeback.

#1 Girls’ Generation “Gee”
Listen, boy. My first love story. My Angel. And My Girls. My Sunshine. Let’s go! LET’S FUCKING GOOOOO TIFFANY!!! Melon’s song of the decade. Music Bank’s song of the year, where it held a record of most music show wins until the streak was broken in 2012. Major awards at almost every year end award show (except MAMA, but SM totally skipped MAMA that year). Their best selling song, with an estimated of over 5 million downloads in Korea alone. This was the single from their first EP of the same name. The song would top the charts for weeks. Not my most favorite from the group, but I will never not listen to it. It’s pretty perfectly Kpop. It’s been a while, so let’s check out the MV again.

Honorable Mentions

#6 Kim Kyung Rok featuring Baby J “We Are Now Strangers”

This was the solo debut from V.O.S’s youngest. He was the first of the trio to release a full solo album. Couldn’t find much about this song either. But I guess it did well, it’s in the top ten. V.O.S as a group does well on the charts too. The song features Jewelry’s Baby J. Here’s his debut solo stage at Music Core.

#8 K.Will “Love 119”
This was his debut song under Starship. The song originally features MC Mong. But he didn’t appear in any of the live performances. Most of the music show stages is with Jang-geun, who I think is Park Jang-geun, now one half of the producer/songwriting duo Duble Sidekick. He’s worked with both K.Will and MC Mong so I’m just guessing. Here’s the song on Music Core.
