Director of Kohaku explains the lack of K-pop artists at this year's Kohaku

In our previous article, we announced that Big Bang, Girls' Generation, and KARA will be absent from this year's Kohaku Uta Gassen, one of the biggest Japanese performance events annually. As previously reported, this also marks the first time in recent years that no Korean artist will appear on the show.

Fans are probably wondering why no Korean artists were invited to the show because this year has been a successful year for Korean artists in Japan ranging from Big Bang's continual rise in popularity to the debut of both KARA and Girls' Generation.

Keisuke Inoue, the head director of Kohaku, said that although it was discussed, an offer simply wasn’t put out.

“It is certain that this year, K-pop has been remarkable on the Japanese music scene. This movement will surely continue into next year, and we will support it. The next chance we have, we will definitely invite them to Kohaku“.

He also stated that the process to plan Kohaku is a meticulous process, where participants are selected and their music are listened to with a certain frame of mind for the show.

On a side note, although we will not be seeing them on Kohaku. We can expect to see at least 2 of the groups on Japan's 52nd Record Awards, since Big Bang received, "Best Song Award" and Girls' Generation received "New Artist's Award". It is yet to be seen who of the 10 "Best Song Award" recipients will get the "Japan Record Awards" (the most prestigious award of the show) and who will win the "Best Newcomer's Award" of the 4 recipients of the "New Artist's Award". Japan's 52nd Record Awards is set to broadcast on the evening of December 30th.

Will you look forward to seeing Korean artists on next year's Kohaku?
