Taiwanese back S.Korean boycott after taekwondo row: poll

More than half of the Taiwanese public support a boycott of South Korean products after the controversial disqualification of the island's taekwondo fighter in the Asian Games, a poll showed Wednesday.

Some 50.3 per cent of the 1,002 people interviewed by Global Views magazine from December 19-21 supported a boycott against South Korean products launched by fans of female taekwondo athlete Yang Shu-chun.

Yang was disqualified from last month's Games and taekwondo's world governing body is based in South Korea.

In the poll 32 per cent opposed the boycott while the rest had no comment.

About 65.6 per cent said their impression of South Korea had turned negative due to the incident at the Games in China, while 57.6 per cent said the controversy would hurt ties between Taipei and Seoul, the survey found.

Yang has denied accusations of wearing extra sensors in her socks to score at the Games, while angry fans blamed South Korea for her disqualification and called for a boycott of the country's food, television dramas and other goods.

No figures are available about the extent of the boycott, but after Yang's disqualification some Korean restaurants told local media that they had lost business, while a Korean school in Taipei had eggs thrown at it several times.

Taiwanese hackers attacked the website of the Seoul-based World Taekwondo Federation earlier this month after it suspended Yang for three months over the incident.

Officials at Taiwan's Sports Affairs Council said they would press for an appeal on her behalf at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
