Knock Out banned on KBS, SBS & MBC

GD&TOP’s third title track, “Knock Out“, has been banned from all three public broadcasting networks.

KBS, MBC, and SBS stated that the reason for the ban was because the title and lyrics used slang, which they believed would damage the national psyche. The song itself has been popular on music charts, and news of the song’s ban quickly became a controversy amongst fans and netizens alike. The majority are of the belief that the ban is “ridiculous and out of line.”

One netizen commented, “TV dramas are allowed to show adultery, violence, swears, and even sexual abuse. I cannot understand why they would say that the expressions used in ‘Knock Out’ is a problem.”

Representatives of YG Entertainment commented, “The song has already been released to the public, and we cannot edit the title or the song just because the public broadcast networks ban it. We won’t be editing anything that damages the original meaning of the song.”

G-Dragon had previously revealed that he drew inspiration for the song’s Korean title, ‘Bbeokigayo,’ from the MBC drama, “My Name is Kim Sam Soon“, since it was an expression used by the leading character.

GD&TOP has decided to jump over their triple track promotion by promoting an additional two songs, making it a total of five tracks they will be promoting this cycle.

I was expecting High High to get banned at some point, but this? WTF?
kellygreen 4th-Jan-2011 01:22 pm (UTC)
Yeah, same here! Drunk Big Bang members + a plethora of waegooks seemed to me like it would be far more offensive to the average Korean than a bit of slang (that was popularized on Kim Sam Soon anyway, one of the most popular kdramas ever). Whatevs. *Kanye shrug*

I love GD a little more knowing that he likes My Name is Kim Samsoon.

This is the same Korea that banned an MV of a guy running on the street for traffic reasons. LMAO While abandoning the REAL issues at hand.

'KBS, MBC, and SBS stated that the reason for the ban was because the title and lyrics used slang, which they believed would damage the national psyche. '

Hahaha, the Korean national psyche? Don't make me laugh. The same psyche that goes out and drinks until it can't walk on a Wednesday night, the same psyche that pushes and shoves people on the subway, or that spits in the streets?

Yeah, I can really see how you'd need to protect that from a pop song. How patronizing to its own citizens to declare that they're incapable of handling something that isn't clinically formalized and banal.

(Some) Korean people need to accept that Korea isn't all kittens and rainbows, and that diversity and colorful language are a part of modern life.

Good luck globalizing and accepting other cultures when you spend far too much time censoring your own instead of tackling the *real* issues.

I really don't understand why they banned the song after GTOP have already performed it several times. I could maybe get banning the MV b/c of butt chairs or smth but this is ridiculous.
nimco 4th-Jan-2011 09:28 am (UTC)
they only performed it on Mnet and they didn't ban it.
