“Every year the company holds a ‘Cube Stars Party’ showcase. If you get 1st or get a good response/evaluation then you get your chance to debut. During the first showcase it was G.Na noona, the during second, A-Pink had that honor. During the third one, the 5 member group and Peniel and Minhyuk were chosen and that’s how it became to be the 7 of us.” (Seo Eunkwang)
- Please tell us of how each of you became to be a singer.
“I fell into music in the 3rd year of middle school by singing songs by SG Wannabe and Buzz. At random times I would listen and sing a song and 3 years ago I became a trainee. I dream of being a singer like Kim Bumsoo-sunbaenim who moves people with his songs.” (Seo Eunkwang)
“When I was little I really liked singing and acting so I’m majoring in Musical right now in college. I was selected to be in the group last September.” (Lee Minhyuk)
“I was born in Chicago in the USA. I passed the JYP Audition and was a trainee at JYP for the past 2 years. After I came out of JYP I was chosen to be at Cube and I was the last one to come into the group.” (Peniel)
“I failed the final stage of JYP open auditions. Haha. It was 3 years ago and I was really a child but I’m really embarrassed of the clips going around. They said that the Yook-sshi didn’t have much talent for singing and I want to bring honor to my family by being a singer.” (Yook Sungjae)
“I went searching around lots not to just be a singer but because I wanted to also compose and to produce. And from that I came into Cube and I hope to be able to make BTOB’s music with the members. My older sister is also a singer (JYP’s Joo) and she is also a strong supporter.” (Jung Ilhoon)
“I was a skateboard athlete during my second year of high school and I changed my path to applied music. My specialty is playing the piano and drums.” (Lee Changsub)
“My father was a singer (Lim Jihoon) but he hated the fact that I wanted to be a singer. I had to finally get his permission to play the guitar. I decided to study instead so I was send to study in Shanghai for 2 years and attended a Chinese school. But, I couldn’t give up my dream to become a singer so I returned to Korea and went into Cube.” (Lim Hyunsik)
-What do you learn when you’re a trainee?
“Usually we had lessons from 1 in the afternoon to 10 at night. Vocal, Foreign Languages, Dance, Acting, Acrobatics were all required classes. The rookie development team placed each member according to where their skills were. Just like ‘KPOPSTAR’ every week we chose a song and then had middle evaluations, they also had end of the month evaluations. If you don’t show any improvements or refuse to practice during that period you were ‘out’. But luckily we all endured it well. This is our company’s distinct character-training program. We also cleaned the banks of the Han River and picked up fallen leaves at Chungdam-dong. We also went to orphanages and made lots of relationships. At first I thought ‘why are we doing things like this’ but after going for so often we grew closer to the children and I felt really good inside. We also take a sex-education classes through a Professor Gu Sungae.” (Lim Hyunsik)
- It must have been difficult to be a trainee for an amount of years with no promise of debuting.
“You seem to practice tomorrow and the day after, I always thought that I would only be a trainee forever. I always thought of when I would debut and thought that it would always be sometime distant from now and when I heard that they had placed me into a team I didn’t believe it and it didn’t sink in. I was dumbfounded when we were recording and then taking jacket photos. After standing on our debut stage, I finally realized that I had became a singer. If I didn’t have any hardships or sufferings during the time when I was trainee, I feel that I wouldn’t know how happy I feel now.” (Lee Changsub)
“It was very unusual for me being the member that was the oldest. The though of being older than 20 and having no promise of debuting and also having to serve my military duty sometime… . I was selected first before all of the members so I practiced til late at night. I thought of my parents and clenched my teeth tight and went through it all.” (Seo Eunkwang)
- What is something that is unique to BTOB and can be used as a weapon?
“We are capable of performing, and even playing as a band. We may be a dance group now but next time we could come out as a band. Also the members have this greed of composing, which led to having a dream of being a singer-songwriter group. We also have sharpened our skills in various languages and after we gain recognition in our own country we hope to go out to and perform on varies global stages.” (Lim Hyunsik)
